Thor vs. Wonder Woman: Can the God of Thunder Beat the Amazon Princess?

With how many Marvel movies are out there (23), it’s hard to not think about mash-ups and death matches against two characters that didn’t do so in the big screen. One of the most popular matches people want to see is Thor vs. Wonder Woman.

Tale of the Tape

Thor Odinson

If Marvel had its own version of DC’s “holy trinity”, then Thor will definitely be part of it (along with Captain America and Iron Man). The brash one of the three, Thor’s arrogance has been tempered by his banishment, his father’s death, and his ascension to the Asgardian throne. He’s also one of the most powerful of the Marvel trinity, with all the powers and abilities blessed by his Asgardian heritage, not to mention wielding one of the most powerful weapons in all of the Marvel universe.

Bio

The blood son of Odin All-Father, the previous King of Asgard, and Gaea, one of the Elder Gods of Earth, Thor Odinson is an Asgardian deity that derives his powers from both Asgard and Midgard (the Asgardian name for Earth).

Raised in the royal Asgardian court, Thor honed his powers and abilities surrounded by some of the Marvel Universe’s best warriors and magic wielders, not to mention one of the most technologically advanced race in the galaxy. Since childhood, Thor showed a propensity for heroism and nobility, albeit at times clouded by pride and arrogance.

When he reached maturity, Odin All-Father decided to teach Thor humility by sending him to Earth as the mortal Donald Blake, a crippled medical student. In this form, Thor learned how to persevere without his strength and powers, instead overcoming obstacles with sheer willpower and learning to sympathize with the people he will be guarding. Eventually, he discovers his true heritage and takes over his father’s role as King of Asgard, but not before his adventures with the Avengers, the God Squad, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and various other superhero teams.

Powers and Abilities

As the God of Thunder, Thor can summon magic lightning at will, channeled through his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir. Aside from this, he’s also gifted with super strength, and is the most physically powerful of all Asgardians (who are, as a race, already in possession of superhuman strength). He’s also able to create storms at will, fly, and regenerate from injuries quickly.

He is also an excellent combatant, trained since birth in the art of war by Asgard, which means he is proficient in most forms of armed and unarmed combat. As a God, he is also able to resist telepathic attacks and mental influence.

Weapons

Thor’s most famous weapon is Mjolnir, the enchanted hammer of Asgard. Made from Uru metal, it’s one of the most powerful weapons ever to exist in the Marvel universe, able to withstand, absorb, and blast out extremely high levels of energy. Combined with various enchantments by Odin, Mjolnir is a formidable weapon capable of taking on mortals, immortals, gods, and various other Celestial beings. When thrown, Mjolnir will return to Thor should he summon it. But perhaps Mjolnir most famous power is that it can only be wielded by ‘one who is worthy’; anyone, be it God or mortal, that Mjolnir deems unworthy will not be able to move Mjolnir from its spot.

Aside from this, Thor has also wielded Jjarnbjorn and Stormbreaker (in the MCU). Jjarnbjorn was Thor’s weapon of choice prior to proving himself worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Jjarnbjorn was a battle axe created by Dwarves that was enchanted with Thor’s lifeblood, giving it extreme durability, able to pierce even Celestial armor. Stormbreaker, on the other hand, is a MCU weapon that Thor wielded against Thanos. Made from the same Uru metal as Mjolnir, Stormbreaker was forged from the heart of a neutron star, and imbued with the same powers as Thor’s hammer.

Diana Prince

Wait, is Wonder Woman Marvel or DC? She’s DC. In fact, she is one DC’s most iconic characters, not to mention the DCEU’s most successful movie franchise to date. Diana Prince, also known as Wonder Woman, completes the DC’s ‘holy trinity’ along with Batman and Superman. Princess of the Amazons and Daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta, Wonder Woman left the island of Themyscira to become the Amazon’s ambassador of peace and goodwill to Earth. She is a founding member of the Justice League, and is one the very few heroes in the DC universe that is capable of defeating Superman using both her physical strength and her genius-level intellect, not to mention her centuries-worth of experience and wisdom.

Bio

Born to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, and Zeus, the King of the Gods of Olympus, Diana is the rightful heir and ruler of Themyscira, the island of the Amazons. A demi-God blessed with the power and strength of the most powerful Olympian God, Zeus, Diana was trained from birth to be the most powerful Amazonian warrior, training in all forms of combat and weapons, not to mention wielding the Lasso of Truth.

After being chosen as a representative of Themyscira to the outside world, Diana eventually arrived to the United States, where she was promptly arrested. In her cell, she was visited by the other Olympian gods and blessed with powers of super strength, speed, endurance, flight, and empathy. She was eventually released, and decided to fight for the Americans during World War 2.

Eventually, she became one of Man’s Worlds ultimate defenders, and is one of the founding members of the Justice League. She is known for her grace, immense beauty, nobility, and kindness.

Powers

As a demi-god, she is gifted with Divine Empowerment, which includes superhuman strength, durability, stamina, flight, speed, reflexes, and agility, not to mention an accelerated healing factor that allows her to recover from serious injuries in a matter of minutes.

She is also gifted with enhanced senses, meaning that all her five senses are attuned at a higher level than mortals, a power given to her by Artemis, goddess of the Hunt. She is also trained, since birth, in Amazonian martial disciplines, from weapons training, equestrianism, hand-to-hand combat, and tactical analysis. She is proficient in every weapon known to the DC universe, but is most proficient in sword, javelin, bow, and her Lasso.

Weapons

Wonder Woman’s iconic weapons, the Lasso of Truth and the Bracelets of Submission, are Amazonian relics of immense power. The Bracelets of Submission are a pair of indestructible metal cuffs forged by Hephaestus using the Eighth Metal, a divine substance that is capable of withstanding tremendous amounts of energy.

Meanwhile, the Lasso of Truth is a magical lariat made from the Golden Girdle of Gaea. It is completely indestructible, unbreakable, immutable, and capable of compelling anyone caught in its grasp to speak only the truth when asked by the lasso’s wielder.

Aside from these, Wonder Woman also has access to the entire Olympian arsenal, not to mention able to request Hephaestus, Blacksmith of the Gods, to forge her new weaponry for every situation imaginable.

Thor vs. Wonder Woman: Who Would Win?

So, in a straight-up death match between these two, who would come out on top?

Easy: Thor.

Since the first Marvel movie (i.e. 2008’s Iron Man) started hinting at Thor’s arrival to the MCU, the God of Thunder had become a fan favorite, helped out immensely by Chris Hemsworth’s masterful delivery. However, even prior to the movies, Thor had been one of Marvel comics most iconic, most powerful characters, taking on the likes of Gods, mortals, Celestials, and other impossibly powerful beings. He has faced being depowered, being resurrected from death, and seen the destruction of his homeworld.

Yes, Diana Prince, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, is a demi-God, but understand: Thor is a God-God. Yes, Wonder Woman was gifted with powers of Olympian Gods, but there is no comparison to the powers of the God of Thunder himself. Beside Thor, Wonder Woman is a formidable, but otherwise defeatable, opponent.

Although she is played by Gal Gadot, so it’s a loss I don’t celebrate at all.
